Tiruppur is located about 52 km from Coimbatore on the banks of the Noyyal river. Owing to the fact that it contributes to about 90 per cent of India’s cotton knitwear exports, it has been awarded the title, “knitwear capital”. This town’s efficiency has boosted India’s textile industry for the past three decades.

Tiruppur is home to Special Industrial Parks. During excavations, artefacts of the ancient city of Tiruppur were collected in the form of coins and old pottery items in many places of the modern city. Tiruppur also finds mention in the epic Mahabharata. It is said that the farmers of this region were very concerned as their cattle were captured by their enemies and Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers, returned the livestock to the residents at a place called Dharapuram Nirai Thiruputhal. This is how, legend says, Tiruppur got its name.
