Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Museum and Planetarium

Also known as Sardar Sangrahalaya, this museum was established in 1889. It houses artefacts that represent the rich history and the eclectic ethnic mix of Surat. Some of the interesting displays one can find are traditional textiles, metal ware, wood carvings, porcelain items, books and precious stones. Earlier, it was used to assemble collections for research purposes as it was set up with an aim to preserve, collect and exhibit objects of heritage interest. The museum is a popular haunt for school and college students, who come here to learn more about the city's cultural heritage. It also serves as a research centre. A planetarium lying close by is also worth a visit as it runs a show on the universe in the Gujarati language.
