It is a Buddhist complex with meditation halls and a temple site atop the Mahindra hills in Secunderabad, near Hussain Sagar lake. The complex offers splendid views of the city. The hall of the temple has a large golden statue of Buddha and another smaller idol of Buddha is placed in a mini garden outside.

The Vihara was inaugurated in 2002 by the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. It was started in 1974 and aims at spreading Buddhist values and reviving the culture. On April 6, 2003, the Dalai Lama dedicated the statue of Buddha in a position called the Dhamma Desana Mudra. Anand Buddha Vihara is considered to be the hub of Buddhist activities that take place in the city.
