Sitting on a hilltop and offering stunning views of the Indus valley, the oft-photographed Thiksey monastery is one of the most recognisable monasteries in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir. Built in 1430 AD, the monastery belongs to the Gelugpa order of Tibetan Buddhism. Lakhang Nyerma, a temple dedicated to Goddess Dorje Chenmo, is located within the Thiksey monastery. Inside the monastery stands a magnificent 49-ft-high statue of Maitreya Buddha that is said to have taken about four years to be constructed. Thiksey monastery is less than 20 km from Leh.
Dating back to nearly one thousand years, the monastery has strong Tibetan influence in its art and architecture.
