Lhalung or Tayul gompa is among the oldest Tibetan Buddhism monasteries in Himachal Pradesh. Located at an elevation of 3,900 m above the sea level in Lahaul and Spiti district, it is known for a 5-m-high statue of Guru Padmasambhava. The monastery has beautiful artworks and ancient Buddhist scriptures, including kangyur, which is a collection of Buddha's teachings into the Tibetan language.
The nearest prominent place is Manali, 120 km away, though regular transport is available from Keylong town, 6 km away.
The Kardang gompa is believed to have been constructed in the 12th century. Situated by the banks of the Bhaga river, the monastery is famous for its large library of ancient Buddhist scriptures.
One of the oldest and largest monasteries in the valley, it is also a centre for Buddhism studies.
The oldest continuously functioning Buddhist monastery in India, five of the nine shrines inside its campus date from the 10th and 11th centuries.
