The Sangacholing monastery is located on a hill top on the periphery of Pelling town in western Sikkim. The monastery was built in 1697 under the aegis of Gyalwa Lhatsum Chempo. Sangacholing is located opposite to the Pemayangtse monastery and is exceedingly acclaimed among the followers of the Nyingmapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
Even though it has been devastated by fire everytime, the monastery has been rebuilt every time. It also has a handsome collection of clay statues. Located on the top of high ridge, entry into the Sangachoeling monastery is strictly restricted to the Bhutia and Lepcha communities. An old crematorium is located near the Sangachoeling Monastery, which been used for the last three centuries.'
One must undertake an uphill hike of 4 km, which takes about 40 minutes to reach the monastery from Pelling town.
