ABOUT THE

Attraction

Major attractions at Langudi hills in Odisha's Jajpur district, also known as Pushpagiri Mahavihara, are the 34 rock-cut stupas, Buddha sculpture in samadhi mudra and the rock-carved sculpture of Goddess Tara. A Brahmi inscription discovered here calls it “puṣpa sabhar giriya” (flower-filled hill) or Pushpagiri. The ruins of a large stupa discovered here is believed to have been constructed by emperor Ashoka.

Chinese pilgrim Hiuen Tsang, describes the place in his travelogue. He mentions that a stone was placed atop a stupa that emanated supernatural light and did other miraculous things. It is believed that a covering placed by worshippers between the stupa’s dome and the amalaka (the stupa’s crown) remained suspended there without any visible support. The Buddhist ruins here indicate that this place was a significant centre of the Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana sects of Buddhism.

The nearest prominent city is Cuttack, 62 km away
