Attraction

Situated on the western banks of the Indus river, the Hemis monastery is one of the largest and most richly endowed monastery of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir. Built in 1630, this impressive monastery is the spiritual centre of Drukpa Buddhist followers. It has stark white walls and the entrance to the complex is through an enormous gate that opens up to a wide courtyard decorated with carved wood. The main prayer hall has an 8-m-high statue of guru Padmasambhava. The monastery also houses a library of important Tibetan books and has a collection of valuable collection of ancient thangkas and gold idols. One of the largest thangkas is displayed once in every 12 years during the Hemis Festival, held for two days in June-July. The annual festival commemorates the birth anniversary of guru Padmasambhava. The Hemis monastery is situated about 45 km from Leh town.
