Located near the town of Yuksom in Sikkim, is a very popular Buddhist shrine of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The shrine, located within the Dubdi monastery, is also pivotal to Sikkim’s history and is considered to be the oldest structure there. Dubdi was constructed in 1701 and has alternatively been named as the Hermit’s Cell after its founder, Lhatsun Namkha Jigme.

Located on a hilltop an surrounded by a dense chestnut tree forest, Dubdi offers mesmerising scenic views. A short trek leads to the monastery and a panoramic view of the snow-capped Himalayas. Elaborately painted, the monastery is set at an altitude of 2,100 m. The walls carry images of divinities, saints, other symbols and the monastery also preserves a collection of manuscripts and texts. Along with these, there are statues of three lamas positioned in the monastery, who worked towards the establishment of Yuksom.
