Attraction

The Alchi gompa is situated on the banks of the Indus river and is one of the most important Buddhist centres in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir. Dating back to nearly one thousand years, the monastery has strong Tibetan influence in its art and architecture. There are five shrines inside the monastery with intricate wall paintings. One of its walls features thousands of miniature sized images of the Buddha with three brightly coloured clay images. The monastery is looked after by the nearby Likir monastery. Leh town is around 65 km away.

Though in ruins now, the brick stupa seems to resemble the ones excavated at Nagarjunakonda in Andhra Pradesh. Excavations have led to the discovery of bases of stupas and votive stupas, and walls of a monastery, and many important antiquities.
