The term Tezpur, in the district of Sonitpur means town of blood. The city acquired its name owing to a myth involving a fierce battle that was fought between Hari (Lord Krishna) and Hara (Lord Shiva in the form of Banasura, the king), and the entire city was drenched in human blood, hence the name. Tezpur has 73 tea gardens including the biggest tea garden in the world.
At approximately 15 km away from Tezpur, you’ll find the nearest airport at Sonitpur district called the “Saloni Airport”. There are several flights that connect Saloni Airport to Guwahati, Jorhat and Kolkata. There are flights, in and out, from Sonitpur to Guwahati on a daily basis; and 3 flights per week to Kolkata and Jorhat.
Tezpur has its own railway station called Rangapara North Railway Station, which is connected with Guwahati railway station. Guwahati is the nearest major railhead, which has several trains from all the important destinations of India.
The most convenient and preferred way of commuting to Tezpur is by roadways. Frequent bus services are available to and from the city and this include both the state run and the private bus services. The ASTC (Assam State Transport Corporation), operating in the state, connects all the major places of Assam like Tezpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sibsagar, Jorhat, Nagaon and Guwahati and also the neighboring areas of Itanagar, Bamdila, Tawang and Siliguri.
