However, the highlight of the town is the Ratnadurga Fort which is surrounded by the large Arabian Sea. The fort here also has an ancient lighthouse built in 1867.
Ratnagiri also played a significant role in India's freedom struggle by being the birthplace of freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak.
