Kesaria

KESARIA

Kesaria is a driving stop on the Buddhst Circuit, 40 km by road from Vaishali and a further 150 km to Kushinagar in UP. Kesaria gained prominence in 1998 when the Archaeological Survey of India began excavating a large mound to unveil a Buddhist stupa that rises 104 feet from a base girth of 1400 feet. This makes it the world’s tallest stupa, exceeding the dimension of Indonesia’s Borobudur.

Excavation is progressing. The Kesaria stupa’s imposing environs would in all probability add greater value to this part of the Circuit that connects Bihar with UP, continuing to Lumbini in Nepal and the return drive through UP to Kapilvastu and Sravasti. Visitor services at Kesaria should emerge in due course.
