Madikeri

MADIKERI

Madikere, located in Coorg in Karnataka, is a quiet, relaxed hill-town that can rejuvenate the soul. Mudduraja Keri was the capital of the Kodagu King Mudduraja in 1681. Later it came to be known as Madikeri. It is the headquarters of Kodagu District standing at a height of 1,170 metres above sea level. Madikeri is famous for its coffee and oranges. Kodavas are believed to be the descendants of the soldiers of Alexander the Great who invaded India in 327 BC. The soldiers married into the local population and migrated along the coast. Having maintained a separate identity, this warrior like clan is fiercely independent and was never conquered by either Tipu Sultan or the British.
