The Old City is sometimes referred to as Vishwanatha Khanda. It is flanked by Dashashwamedha Ghat and Godaulia on south and west, and the Manikarnika Ghat on the north. Visitors can walk through a maze of narrow alleys and the Vishwanatha Gali (lane) to reach the Vishwanatha or Vishweshwara temple complex. 

This temple is popularly called the golden temple of Varanasi as it has a massive gold plating on its spire. The temple houses one of the most important shivlings of the country and attracts thousands of devotees. It is made of smooth black stone and is seated on a solid silver plinth. The temple is one of the most sacred places in the city of Varanasi, besides being an architectural marvel.
