Dotted with temples that are noted for their architectural beauty, the town of Devakottai lies 120 km from Rameswaram. Another attraction is Ramnagar Church or Holy Redeemer's Church that draws devotees from far and wide. The best time to visit this town is during the annual festival of Kandhar Sashti Vizha. Attended by many eminent personalities including Carnatic musicians and other prominent literary figures, this festival has been held for more than 60 years in the town. Other attractions in Devakottai include Silambani Pillayar Kovil, Ranganatha Perumal Kovil and Nagara Sivan Kovil. The word 'Devakottai' means the fort of the goddess. This town also played a prominent role during the Indian freedom movement as a courtroom was burned here during the Quit India Movement.
