Trekking at Madhatop

Considered as one of the most amazing treks in the country, Madhatop is a five km trek from Patnitop. A trek up to Madhatop is made undeniably pleasurable by thick woods and a panoramic view of the Chenab basin accentuated by mountains that are partly obscured by clouds, creating an eerie yet striking sight.

It is located at an altitude of 2,024 m, and is covered in winter with a few good inches of snow, making it perfect for beginner skiers and trekkers. Many operators also offer scenic hot air balloon rides, a particular delight for couples and families with small children.

Shopping

Patnitop is not just known for its natural beauty but is also a haven for shoppers. The small hill station is noted for dry fruits, Dogra jewellery, handicrafts and paintings from Kashmir, and exquisite Pashmina shawls in a plethora of colours. Do not miss taking home souvenirs from shops near the Naag Temple; the objects sold at the temple are depictions of ancient times, and are as eccentric as they are lovely. Buy Pickles

Pickles in Jammu are a favoured item. The home-made recipe includes kasrod (fiddlehead fern) and mango with saunf (fennel), zimikand (elephant foot yam), chillies, radish, carrot, beans and potatoes. Taking home some of these is a must when you visit Patnitop. According to legend, it was the royal Dogra dynasty, who ruled the state of Jammu and Kashmir from the mid-18th to the mid-19th centuries, who reinforced the tradition of pickle-making here. The wives of the Dogra warriors would prepare delicious dishes for their battle-worn husbands upon their return, and would preserve pickles for a long time; pickles therefore gained a special place in the royal kitchen.

A visit to Nathatop

A short trek from Patnitop takes one to Natha Top, which remains covered in snow during winters. It is a good place for skiing and is also known for paragliding. Situated at an altitude of 2,711 m, the Kishtwar range of the Himalayas is visible from Natha Top, as is the Brammah Massif, which comprises the well-known peaks of Flat Top, Arjuna, and Brammah I and II.

The interesting thing about these peaks is that Brammah II is the highest of the lot, despite its name suggesting otherwise. However, Brammah I is definitely the most dramatic, rising theatrically from the western edge from a lower base.
