One of the best ways to experience the traditional culture and way of life of the Ladakhi people is a homestay. Leh and its outskirts are full of homestays run by local families that offer a great experience in a budget. Usually a room and meals are included, along with recommendations for things to do and farming opportunities. The hosts spoil guests with lots of butter tea, thukpa, and skyu. Staying with locals also means hearing folk tales and Ladakhi songs. Some of these homestays also feature on larger trekking routes. Traditional Buddhist thangka paintings and wooden choktse tables, along with other interior elements unique to the region can be found at these homestays.

Tukchu Homestay, near Leh's Shanti Stupa, is run by the family of Tashi Gyaltsen, and is considered to be one of the most famous homestays in the Leh.
