The making of crossbows attracts tourists due to its novelty. It is a functional craft that features a central wooden beam, which has grooves and iron loops to hold the arrows and the quiver.

Cane and bamboo works are also popular in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and are generally created by settlers from Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. Cane baskets are much-loved and are made from thin twigs.

Shell Crafting

The expansive beaches of Andaman and Nicobar Islands are rife with shells that are used to create beautiful articles. Decorative items like table lamps, showpieces, boxes and ashtrays along with jewellery like bangles and neckpieces are made from these shells. Of all the shells available here, the conch and tortoise shells are the most valuable. They come in all sizes from large to small and have beautiful hues. With the craft flourishing, it is fast becoming a business centre and is providing employment to locals.

Wood craft

The local crafts of Andaman and Nicobar Islands include woodwork and carpentry. Several wooden articles and furniture are sold here. Items made from ornamental wood like chui, paduk and marblewood are quite popular. Paduk burr is mostly used to make table tops that are a beautiful piece of work. Another speciality is driftwood that is shaped by the currents and the flow of the sea. It is used to make lovely art objects. It is also used in crafting canoes and fencing plantations, along with the construction of houses.

Palm mats

The coastal areas of Andaman and Nicobar Islands boast a multitude of palm trees, which are a rich source of palm fibre from which palm mats are made. Palm mats are quite popular and are used as doormats or seating mats. These mats are traditional handicrafts that enhance the beauty of the decor. They are generally crafted by women in their free time and are made from pandanus leaves and stems of coconut. The texture of the mats is light, soft and cool.
