Understanding India
A single aspect about India that cannot be disputed is its plurality. India represents a unique mixture of ethnic groups, myriad languages, varieties of topography and climate, a profusion of religions and cultural practices, and a range of levels of economic development. It is an ageless civilisation, the birthplace of four major religions, where 17 major languages and 22,000 dialects are spoken. It has 51 percent literacy, yet it has the world’s largest pool of scientists and engineers. India is more than the sum of its contradictions, and there exists not just one India but many Indias. What better way to gain an understanding of this complex and contradictory country than through its culture and traditions?

Madurai
The oldest existing city in the Indian peninsula and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Madurai is richly steeped in cultural heritage. The city, earlier known as Madhurapuri, grew around a huge temple built by Pandian King Kulasekhara 2,500 years ago. Madurai became famous during the Sangam period through the third and last conglomeration of Tamil scholars, which existed for more than 100 years. The city was the magnificent capital of Pandya kings and visited by travellers such as Megasthenes (302 BC), Pliny (77 AD), Ptolemy (140 AD), Marco Polo (1203 AD) and Ibu Batuta (1333 AD). Today, Madurai is synonymous with the awe-inspiring Meenakshi-Sundareswarar Temple.

Fairs & Festivals
The colourful mosaic of Indian festivals and fairs, as diverse as the land itself, is an eternal expression of India’s spirit of joy and celebration. Observed with enthusiasm and gaiety, festivals provide vibrant interludes to the routine of life. While some festivals are linked to seasons and the agrarian cycle of life, others commemorate Gods and Goddesses, saints and prophets and great historical happenings. The same festival, though celebrated differently in the various parts of the country, exhibits an eternal harmony of the spirit of celebration. These are times when people gather together, linked by ties of shared social and religious beliefs. Dance, music, attire and rituals, all add to their joyful rhythm. Myth, tradition, religion are lauded to create some of the most colourful, joyous and exhilarating events that are a celebration of life.
