Pulicat is a 17th century Dutch settlement located about 60 km north of Chennai on the shores of the Pulicat Lake, which is in fact, a lagoon. Pulicat, situated within the Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary, is an area of great ecological interest as well, since lagoons, estuaries and wetlands surround it. These wetlands also support a large number of resident and migratory waterfowl. Every year between the months of October and March, thousands of migratory birds land here. Though many species can be seen, the flamingos are the most visible, covering the swamps surrounding the lake, with a pink hue.
