Have you always thought of India as a hot, sunny country, just the place to come to get a perfect golden tan? It might surprise you to know we have a perfectly respectable winter season too, and it’s already under way, with mornings and evenings having turned pleasantly cool. Winters in India mean:

Winter Yummies – try the Gujarati undhiyo, Rajasthani kair saangri ka saag, Punjabi makki ki roti with sarson ka saag, all made from a selection of vegetables available only in winter; swop your white bread with the more nutritious Bajra roti; or indulge your sweet tooth with gajjar ka halwa or til ka gajak, made from ingredients believed to have warming properties.

A New Wardrobe– shop for gorgeous silks and woolens that look stunning and keep you toasty warm; since winter is the wedding season, you can probably pick up something dressy to take home; an ethnic jacket or shawl, with tribal motifs, is another great fashion buy that never goes out of style.

Different Passtimes – young India is embracing the great outdoors and whatever your taste in winter sport, you can do it here - choose from rock climbing in Karnataka, trekking in Uttaranchal, skiing in Auli, heli-skiing in Himachal Pradesh, ballooning in Rajasthan and New Delhi.

Weddings and Honeymoons – why not renew your vows the Indian way … we’ll even lay on the guests if you wish!

A Culture Extravaganza – from the fun-filled Goa Carnival to the Surajkund Crafts Mela to the various music and dance festivals held against the stunning backdrop of ancient temple complexes, there’s plenty for culture aficionados.

Graceful, elegant, and eternally stylish … that’s the allure of chikan. Said to have been introduced to India in the 17th century by Noorjehan, the beautiful wife of the Mughal emperor Jehangir, this form of intricate hand embroidery was inspired by Turkish embroidery. Though a number of cities in the Indo-Gangetic plain produce chikan work, the best, most intricate pieces come from Lucknow.
