welcome to join in the celebrations! If you’d like to follow the Independence trail,
here are some places to visit:

- Lucknow , where quelling of the siege of 1857 marked the end of the Great Indian Mutiny, often described as the 1 st War of Independence
- Amritsar , where the Jalianwalla Bagh Massacre of 1919 catalysed the freedom movement in Punjab and paved the way for Mahatma Gandhi's Non-cooperation Movement against the British in 1920
- Ahmedabad , home to Mahatma Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram, from where he guided the Independence movement
- Dandi , 240 miles from Sabarmati, to which Mahatma Gandhi led the “salt march” in 1930, to protest against the unjust British salt laws thereby launching the Civil Disobedience Movement
- Andaman Islands , where the British incarcerated political prisoners in solitary confinement in the Cellular Jail
- Mumbai , from where the Quit India movement was launched in 1942

The Valley of Flowers National Park , nestled high in the Western Himalayas, carpeted with meadows of alpine flowers and home to rare and endangered species like the Asiatic black bear, snow leopard, brown bear and blue sheep, has been recognised as an extension to the Nanda Devi National Park – the list entry will now be known as “ Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers National Park ”.
The Nilgiri Hill Railway , running from Mettupalayam to Ooty, has been recognised as an extension to the Darjeeling Hill Railway – the list entry will now be called “ Mountain Railways of India ”. The mountain railways of India are considered to be outstanding feats of engineering of the 19 th century, with a profound impact on the social and economic development of the regions in which they operate, and serving as models for similar developments worldwide.
